What is AutismWish?

AutismWish is a volunteer-led initiative that is flexible to meet the needs of the autistic child (hereby referred to as the ‘Wisher’). The program is designed to improve the Wisher’s quality of life and increase or maintain independence by granting sensory or therapeutic items off of their ASD-tailored Amazon Wishlist. AutismWish aims to match children who may be eligible to have Amazon Wishlist items granted with public charitable gifters or ‘Heroes’.  These Heroes select and gift specific sensory or therapeutic items off your autistic child’s list to address his/her specific needs.

Note: Although we aim to match all Wishers with Heroes, it is possible that your child will not be matched immediately if there are not enough Heroes at the time.  If this is the case, your child will be placed on a waitlist and will be notified once they are able to be matched with a Hero.

Wishlist Guidelines

  • The wishlist must be created on Amazon.com (U.S. version) and a direct link provided to us in the application. Click here for instructions on how to share your Amazon wishlist.

  • The list must contain items that are sensory, special interest, or therapeutic in nature for your child (this can range from particular toys, tools, clothing etc.)

  • You must include comments in your Amazon wishlist for each item indicating briefly how your child would benefit from it. (e.g. "Recommended by his OT to practice hand eye coordination"). Click here for instructions on how to add comments to items on your wishlist.

  • Although there is flexibility on eligible items, you may be asked to remove items from your list prior to approval in the program if they do not meet eligibility criteria (i.e. sensory or therapeutic related or missing justification). So make sure to include your justification for the need in the item comments section.

  • There are no price limits to items on your child’s Amazon Wishlist, however you must have at least five (5) items under the $20.00 threshold.

  • You may only submit one wishlist per autistic child, however you may update that list as needed. If there are additional eligible children, you must submit a separate application for each additional child.

  • Note: Your Child's Name/nickname, age, amazon link, and specific needs provided in the application will be made public to Heroes (sponsors) for matching purposes.

Disclaimer

Matches are determined by eligibility and availability of Heroes to gift to your child.  There may be cases where a match cannot be made due to no available Heroes at the time.  In these cases, your child's list will be kept on a waitlist to be matched with the next available Hero(es).  You will be contacted once a match has been made. A Hero may gift as much or as little as they deem appropriate.  Multiple Heroes can gift towards a specific child's list or they may opt to gift from a variety of lists.  There is no guarantee that your child will be matched with a Hero or gifted, however we will do our best to find a match.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at autismwish@gmail.com .

Eligibility

In order to be considered for the AutismWish program, your child must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen to apply, Amazon lists must be from U.S. www.amazon.com
  • Child must be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and proof of diagnosis must be included with your application (e.g. a simple note from your child's doctor is sufficient).  Please do not disclose any private information other than diagnosis and date of birth.
  • Child must be 17 years of age or younger and proof of age must be submitted (e.g. including child's date of birth or age in the doctor's note is sufficient).
  • Application must be submitted by child's legal guardian/parent
  • For security purposes, you may exclude your child's last name on all submitted documents/forms, but please include their first name or a nickname. (Note: We will only refer to the name provided when matched with a Hero).

Submitting Proof of Diagnosis

Important:

Please email your child's proof of diagnosis on official letterhead to AutismWish@gmail.com. It must include the following:

  1. Child's first name
  2. Proof of autism/ASD diagnosis
  3. Age or date of birth

Some examples of proof of diagnosis include but are not limited to:

  • A doctor's note
  • A therapy referral (ABA, PT, OT, ST)
  • Diagnosis paperwork

If providing the diagnosis paperwork, you only need to submit the page with the diagnosis as well as the page with your child's name and age. We encourage you to blackout any sensitive information other than those required above prior to sending file. Note: Those who do not submit proof of diagnosis will not be considered for the AutismWish program.

Sample note:

"To Whom It May Concern:

I am the physician who evaluated [CHILD'S FIRST NAME], [DOB: 0/00/0000].  At the time, his/her diagnoses are: [DIAGNOSIS]"
